Tropical Waves

Updated: Jul 17, 2020

The pattern is from PARADISE STITCHED by Sylvia Pippen. This wall hanging is combined of sashiko, hand applique and hand quilt. The fish, dolphins and sea turtles are appliqued by hand. Five traditional Japanese Kamon wave variations are worked in Sashiko on dark blue fabric, close to the indigo, and then appliqued in circles to a graduated background that goes from the dark depth of the ocean to the turquoise blue above. The random waves on the background are quilted with variegated thread to make them more visible. As the author says in the book “it isn’t how perfect your stitches are but how much you enjoy the journey along the way”. It explains how much I enjoyed the stitch work.
