Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher were introduced by Mark Twain in his books, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri. His house was across the street from Becky Thatcher’s house. In 2017, I went on a bus trip to visit the Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton, Missouri. On this trip, we also stopped in Hannibal, Missouri; where I met Christina McCourt, the author of the Tom and Becky’s Sampler Quilt, which was the inspiration for this wall hanging. I used Becky’s home as the background. Tom is painting the fence and Becky is enjoying the lovely day on her swing. I painted the characters and the dog. I used cheesecloth to create the tree trunk, which is a technique I learned from Mary Pal. To add a three-dimensional effect, I hand sewed some leaves on the tree. I enjoyed working on this project.
